The Earth's shadow. Basically the Earth got between the moon and the sun.
Researched answer below:
1) Earth gets in the way

The cause of lunar eclipses is simple: Earth gets in the way.

The Moon is a visible beacon because it reflects sunlight. The Moon makes no light of its own. Earth always casts a shadow into space, and every now and then everything aligns just right so that the shadow falls on the Moon.

Lunar eclipses can only occur at Full Moon, that time each month when the Moon is directly opposite the Earth in relation to the Sun. It's like you, representing the Earth, standing in front of a bright light and casting a shadow on a child.

We did, as in the planet Earth blocked the light from the Sun hitting the Moon, hence, it's called a Lunar eclipse.

It looked vaguely reddish/orange because once the direct light from the Sun was blocked, the light filtering through Earth's atmosphere made the Moon look a bit like Mars.

The total Lunar Eclipse was caused when the Earth passed directly between the moon and the sun.

It was Earth that was positioned directly between the moon & the sun, therefore blocking the suns rays to the moon.
The only light getting to the moon was what is filtered through Earth so gives it that rusty red colouring.Like Mars!!!
Apparently the last 'visible' (due to clear skies) lunar eclipse was in 1982 but there will be another next year, although supposedly not as clear as this one.
I watched it - It was very very beautiful!

The earth. The Sun earth and moon were in near perfect alignment and the change in coliour was due to the moon being in earths shadow. See the BBC link for more info

The earth came between the sun and the moon and blocked the moon from sunlight for a while.

I watched it until quite late, but not right to the end. My husband told me this morning that at the end some huge writing came across the face of the moon, saying 'That's all folks!' So it was all just a publicity stunt for a new film!
