I have a 1-year-old Pekingese puppy, and would like to find another Pekingese for her to mate. I would like her to just have puppies once, then get her spayed. Would the owner of the other puppy expect me to pay them a certain amount of money for the puppies she will have? (Even though I will not plan to sell them, give them to people I know?)

Dogs are not sexually mature until they are preferable a little older than 2 years. Also, you need to take in consideration the time and money it takes to make sure the mom is healthy and to care for the pregnant mom and whelping a litter not to mention the stress it could put on the mother. Pekes are notorious for having tough labors. Are you prepared to deal with labor problems (c-section, puppies dying, mother dying) just to have one litter of pups? I would suggest finding a good book about breeding (which should have a chapter on finding a mate) before making such a huge decision. I hear "breeding for dummies" is an excellent resource. Also look for a breed specific book so you can learn any special needs for whelping the breed.

Well, they recommend waiting till 2 years of age before breeding typically, and honestly there is no need for her to have pups before spaying. You will also need to make sure she is vet certified (i.e no hip, knee, heart or eye problems). Typically you would pay a stud fee to the owner of the male for using him
