There isn't a best kind of laptop and specifications. It all depends on your budget, your preferences and what you want to use the laptop for.

You could be using it to surf the Net and emailling, CAD and mathematical processing, video games, etc. Each usage work best in different specifications.

CAD and mathematical processing work better with duo-core CPUs and more memory. The video adapter is less important.

Video games require a lot of memory and a good video adapter. The CPU could be single core or duo-core.

The average laptop is good enough for surfing the Net, emailling and even watch online videos. You can also do word processing, spreadsheet and presentations. Just get more memory for better performance.

If you are into music, you might want to get a laptop with good internal speakers. You might also want to consider whether to have a built-in camera and use an external camera that can be attached to the screen of the laptop.

If you can afford it, get a DVD-RW drive so that you can read and burn CDs and DVDs. Otherwise, get a CD-RW drive that at least allows you to burn CDs.

If you prefer a laptop to be small and light, there are laptops that do not have a built-in optical drive. You can use an external USB optical drive. However, small laptop also means having a small display screen.

There are many combination of factors that will affect your decision. Think about what have been listed above and check out laptops at the stores.
