Hello,

I have a DELL desktop with windows XP on it. I was recently tried to install linux on it to make it a dual boot system and I somehow screwed up during the process. I then restored the mbr using Windows-XP backp CD and using the fixmbr command.

However, now if I try to boot the machine, I only get a DELL Diagnostics screen.

How do I boot up my Windows XP?

It might be to late, but try hitting F8 while you boot and try to boot into safe mode and do a system restore....
If you have important files on your drive still, reinstal xp, just do a repair, it will overwrite the windows folder, and leave all your other files intact, so you can still recover them hopefully.....

Hope all goes well, ive been there and done that!

Your system already been destroyed during the installation process, the best way to do is to reformat your hard drive, sorry dude for some important files, you might not recovered it. Use another medium of OS, either a bootable disk whihc can help you reformat your system, or any CD with format capability. After reformating it re-install your system using the back-up CD bundled in your computer package.

Before trying the dual boot system, make sure that your DELL XP installer has the latest package to accept dual system, other wise you have to update it in the internet. or try to contact your vendor for the update program or patch files on the system.

If you have a backup CD use it. If not you will have to reformat your computer and do a new installation using the original Windows XP Disc.

This: "i actually have a crap load of viruses on it and secret agent ware" "it must be the secret agent ware and viruses" Sounds to me like it must be too late to do something yet format and rebuild. in spite of you do, get some Anti-virus utility. A single virus may be terrible to no longer point out "a crap load". no longer being able as properly in secure mode kinda tricks you could already be gazing significant OS difficulty. you could try booting off your abode windows CD and attempting a restore or setting up the OS on a distinctive partition. you could ought to look up the thank you to try this in the time of the journey that your uncertain. the two way, be waiting to place in virus utility real away in case you get it up and working. in case you do no longer, you will maximum possibly in simple terms re-contaminate your gadget (until you format, which will delete each and every little thing). solid luck.
