I got an offer to draw a commissioned portrait of a friend's horse. Now I want to do more. Can I call myself professional?

♥Since then, I've had a lot of practice and am much better.

If so, how much should I charge for an 8X10 graphite pencil drawing?

the only different between professional and student artist is the professional charged an arm and a leg for the work. some student are great at art and some art sucks! same goes for the professional. if you know how to sell your works, you are a professional. go out and get some more work and if you can make a living doing what you are doing, hey, you are a professional.

Yes. I've completed commissioned portraits in the past. Unlike say science or engineering, one doesn't need a degree to be an artist. Just make good work, know what you're doing, and derive a living from it. That's professional enough for most people.

an artist is an artist. professional is such a stupid word combined with artist.

and in my opinion, commissioned art like yours isn't art. It is brainless. you are doing what you're told. If the art consisted of YOUR ideas and your touch then it would be art.

you should go to art school. you could use some help with your technique and the conceptual aspects of your work.

there's artists... and then there's GOOD artists. Think about it.

Any time you're being paid for your work you're a professional. Why not have some business cards printed up?
