Yes, I do believe that runes can be very powerful and they do have real power. (Which is why it isn't a good idea to be scribbling them on things without thinking.)

Runes are the letters of a special alphabet used by the ancient Scandinavian and Germanic folk. But a rune is much more than just a letter. The very word rune means mystery or secret.

Each rune has four important characteristics:

1. Physical shape
2. Number
3. Name
4. Sound

These characteristics are interlinked. They combine to give the runes their complex symbolic meaning. Bind runes are runes that are joined together or overlap in some way for apparently magical reasons—thus linked they act as a powerful combination of their individual forces.

The shape of the runes—their visual aspect—form one of the keys to their secrets. Most people are struck by the stark angular shape of the runes. The rune staves are angular because they were designed to be carved into wood, and it is easier to carve angular staves with a knife and they stand out better especially when carved against the grain.

The runic tradition has numerological aspects, though the rune number system differs from the ever popular numerology. The number lore underpinning the runes adds an extra dimension to analyzing rune inscriptions, formulas, and spells.

The names of runes are significant. In English, the letters have no names, only a phonetic sound—“ay, bee, see”, and so on. The only alphabets to have meaningful names for their letters are the Runes, Hebrew, and the Celtic Ogham script. The rune names contain the sound of the rune, as well as the idea. The name in most cases starts with the rune sound, as in A-nsuz and T-iwaz, for example, but in the case of the Z rune, it is at the end: Elha-Z. The names are an important aspect of the esoteric lore of the runes. They name a certain symbol of each rune. For example, “Fehu” means “cattle”. This can indicate actual cattle or a symbol of mobile wealth—gold, fine arts and crafts and similar objects.

While the shape and names of the runes are important aspects of their mysteries, the actul sounds of the runes are very important too. When Odin took up the runes, he is said to have “taken them up screaming”. This indicates a sonic key to the runes. In oral traditions, sound is extremely important. In today’s world of text and disjointed electronic communication, speech, song, and chant are devalued. To understand the resonance of the runes beyond their mere textual values, one needs to appreciate them as spoken, sung, and “roared”. The sonic aspects of the runes are released through Galdra—this means magic, especially that which is verbal or sound based.

Having work with the runes for nearly 20 years I am quite familiar with the power that they possess. The symbols (as well as their phonetic sounds and names) are possessed of great power and tap into the a force known amongst the knowledgable as Wyrd. Wyrd is the sum total of all events snd possiblities that have happened, that are happening and that should happen. by amnipulating these forces one can change both what is happening and what should happen as the present and the future are in a constant state of flux, flowing like rivers and eddies.

I most definately believe in their powers, I have used them successfully for a number of years...in fact using those powers is how I make my living these days.

no, they posses nothing. But they are good when you face some
decision, and do not know what to do.
They tell you to do something - you like it - you arrived to some
decision.
They tell you to do something - you do not like it - you arrived at
your decision (to do opposite).
