You just have to be around the cultures a LOT...people of different races often "all look the same" to someone who doesn't spend a lot of time getting used to their individual features...for instance, I spent over a year in korea in the navy, and now I can see a korean, and be like "he/she's korean"...it's like the way you can tell your dog from another dog that looks like him, or when your mom coughs in a department store full of people, you know it's her....make sense?

I think the more you're around different Asian ethnicities, the more honed your skill will become. Many people in homogeneous Asian countries can't tell a foreign Asian apart if they don't talk. Asian Americans on the other hand, can usually tell what ethnicity someone is.
There are some features found in average people of the same ethnicity. For Chinese, there's a gangster curl on the end of the eyes, which is an extension of the indented skin that curls upward. Chinese people also seem to have a bigger mouth when comparing with the other 2 ethnicities; keep in mind this is very generalized.
Koreans have slimmer and taller noses. Their eyes also tend to be single slit or single side slit, which starts out as a single slit and ends up as a double at the outter area of the eye.
Japanese have more distinct eye brows. I think it's slightly higher than the other 2 ethnicities. They also have high noses, but the shape is less straight than Korean noses. Their lips are thinner and their eyes are bigger.
Again, this is generalized.

Actually, only certain people are filled with the power to differentiate Asians. It's a rare super power sometimes referred to as common sense. Unfortunately, those who aren't born with it, aren't likely to pick it up anywhere. God help the rest of us.
How about you spend some time looking at the different features of Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese people and figure it out for yourself.
For example, Koreans are usually darker skinned, Chinese generally have rounder faces, and Japanese people tend to be very pale. The rest is up to you my friend.
On another note, the Japanese do not like being referred to as "Japs"! That's really considered a racist slur. It's almost equivalant to calling a black person "***.ger" and it's just as unacceptable. Keep that in mind next time you ask a question like this.

No special powers required! It is no different than refering to anyone from central and south America as "Mexican". It is one of those things that people from there get it and don't and we won't unless we spend a lot of time with a certain nationality and you'll pick up on their characteristics, etc. Another example, my husband is Korean (I am a white girl from the sticks of MIssouri) and spending time around him and his family, I can actually tell by looks and language if someone is Korean. I may not know what they are saying but I know what they are!!! So just chill and you'll see with time, you'll get it, too. GOOD LUCK!!!

It's pretty easy for me, but I've lived on the Pacific Rim. Be aware that the Japanese occupation of China resulted in many half Chinese/ half Japanese children though.

Just ask, I know I do not like being assumed to be American and having no trouble telling them otherwise.

Dr. kornpone,
Your question just smacks of outright racism. You wouldn't be upright if you called me a 'jap' to my face...I doubt your inbred family has the courage to approach me in the first place...
Ya see, I'm a terrifying sight...a REAL scary jap.
If you didn't present your question in an outright racist fashion, it would be a good question...and I could have answered it properly.
