Yeah, it should be. I don't know your financial situation, but I'd recommend you purchasing a copy of Esets Nod32. If you don't have any $$$ then I'd recommend you getting the free version of AVG Anti-virus.
If you been infected by a petty virus then your definietly infected with spyware as well. I'm gonna throw you a bunch of links. Download each program. Update each program. Scan with each program before you go to bed. Preferably with "deep" scans(Avg Anti-Spyware and Asquared)
I also through in CCleaner. Run CCleaner and delete all the junk before you run all the scans. This should destroy most of the not so intelligent junk. Then scan.
Everything should be A-OK After you get these scans on there way and delete the outcome..
Good luck,
Dominick

Installing another antivirus application will not help you remove, what you need is a clean up utility, download and install the remover tool from Microsoft, here's the link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
This is free from Microsoft and it will forcefully remove any application that can't be removed into your system and in the registries. It's easy to use, all the instructions on how to run and install it would be in the link.

Uninstall your current anti-virus program and yet a free one.
Avast (Windows): www.avast.com
AVG (Windows): www.avg.com
If you use linux or mac, they don't get many viruses, but you can Google search 'free anti-virus program for mac (or linux)' to find it.
