I assume they are cramps as they occured when he was lying perfectly still on the couch he just grabbed his leg in pain.

Well with a broken leg in a cast.. that could be commom.. lotssa times muscles will cramp up when immobilized and not used.. Check with your Dr ( a phone call should do)

Many people do not realize this but nerves and blood vessels actually feed/go through the bone,so if it has been broke the nerves are going crazy, trying to repair themselves..and this can be VERY painful. Putting the leg gently up on pillow so it dosen't fall off can help.Pain medicine is ***very important, give this to him around the clock when he is awake..even if he is not complaining..it is easier to control the pain..before it starts...he is not faking the pain...Alternate tylenol with Ibuprofen..some Drs do not agree with this, some do..but I know from experience it is okay to do. Do not dose to weight but to (age)..because of kidney function.

they are most likely cramps. call the orthopedist who is treating him. do not let him suffer in pain.
you can also increase his potassium intake by giving him a banana each day and having him drink Gatorade mixed with water.
