Because John Kerry had visions of being President, even when he was a young, dumb, Lt. in Vietnam. If you read his own writings he idolized John F. Kennedy and wanted to be like him, thus he knew that he would have a better chance in politics if he was a decorated veteran. Yet Kerry then soke out against the Vietnam War, when he returned after his shortened tour of duty, so we see the flip flopping pattern that would hamper him 30 years later, developing early on in his political career.

Any injury that was inflicted via bullet, shrapnel, etc. caused during conflict with an opposing force qualifies for a purple heart. Even blue-on-blue incidents (friendly fire.) A competent medical authority has to attest to this fact.
If he deliberately injured himself, then no competent medical authority would recommend a purple heart.

How do we even know what the purple heart was for. Or how he was discharged? Most Vets have these readily accessible, they are badges of honor. Not our Kerry. No records. And you are entertaining, but fooling anyone? Unlikely.
