Before you noticed the faded color were the lights out in the tank? Also, what lighting unit are you using? Most reef tanks or higher end lighting systems once they age, even though the light is on it is not producing like it should. This could be one problem.

Another, Tangs are noted for their faded color when they get stressed. There are no red marks on him are there?

How old is your tank? IF your tank is less than 6 months your fish could be having difficulties due to the lack of bacteria in the water. Have you also tested the water for ammonia?

I would certainly keep an eye on him. As of right now I don't see a a serious problem. Is he eating?

If you need further assistance or if you see him getting worse, feel free to IM or email me asap.

Our yellow tang tends to fade in color if the light has been left on too long, or if hes stressed.

Did you just get it???
If so it is probably just due to stress.
My Yellow tang turned almost white when I first got him, and was realy shy.
Give him a few days to a week to get use to his new surroundings and YOU.
Try not to scare him(when aproching the tank move slowly and no sudden movements)
Sit in front of your tank as much as possable and Ignore him,
If he is anything like mine, he will come out from hiding, Get his colour back, Start showing off to be the center of attention and start eating like a pig out of your hand.LOL
In the meentime test your water to rule out any water problems.
Be Patient And Keep A close eye on him.

some outfits feed fish coloring agents, and some fish foods have them in them.
Also trace mineral content would effect color.
Bass living in deep or stained water are lighter colored and those living in shallow or clear water are darker colored.
