(x-5)/(5-x) = -1*(5 - x)/(5 - x) = -1*1 = -1

Well, the numerator "x-5" can also be written as "-1(-x+5)" or "-1(5-x)." You get this by doing the reverse of the distributive property.

Now the problem is -1(5-x/5-x).

Amazing! Even if you meant (x - 5)/(5 - x), but forgot the parentheses, you get the same result.

x - 5/5 - x = x -1 -x = -1

If you meant to write the expression this way, it is much cooler, because you do not have to make sure the denominator is non-zero.
