I think he was looking for what everyone is looking for in life: a sense of meaning, of purpose, and maybe also God. I don't think anybody truly finds what they're looking for until they die, otherwise, what would be the point of living?
I think as we get older we get closer, but there is always mystery; there are always questions.
Take, for example, the song "One Step Closer" off U2's latest album. Bono wrote it for his father after having a conversation with Liam Gallagher of Oasis shortly after Bono's father's death. They were talking about finding meaning in one's life and how Bono's father was always searching for God. Liam said "Well, he's one step closer to knowing now" and the song was born.
