It depends if there is still any of the bolt coming out of the engine. If not and the bolt is broken in the engine then you will have to tap and rethread the hole in order to put a new bolt on. Either way if you want the job done right you will have to remove the manifold and replace the gasket, hoping the manifold isn’t warped. If you don't hear any exhaust leaks then you will be fine for a while, but you might want to find out why the bolt broke. If he did the work himself, or had a friend do it, how much real experience do they have working on cars? Is he some backyard mechanic? If so I would be more worried about more than just a broken bolt. Make sure you test drive the vehicle and use http://www.kbb.com to find the current value.

Jermaine, that car is 21 years old and probably not worth $1100 but an exhaust manifold bolt will get rusty and crusty with age and should be fixed by a trained mechanic who has the proper tools to remove a broken bolt.It needs to be "heli-coiled" which is a process to remove the broken bolt from the manifold. The price for this repair should be subtracted from the total price, which is too much in my opinion anyway.

Well I think the car has to be in real good shape if you willing to give &1100.00 for it but the broken bolt can be a problum and then it can be easy... if the exsost isent leaking then you could go a long time befor fixing it or if it is then it needs to be fixed soon and a proper shop should do it. P.S. I would look around a little more

The bolt will likely be very hard to fix. It usually involves drilling out and helicoiling. If the rest of the car is in good shape, the price isn't bad. You can ask to buy it for a dollar if you want. It's up to him.

hard to fix? maybe, maybe not. if the manifold can be removed and the bolt extracted easily, good shape. if it's broken off flush with the head, may need to have the head removed to repair properly. offer 500 for the car. if he takes it, good. if not, look for something else.
