Rainbows are created by sunlight passing through water droplets or water vapor in the atmosphere. The light passing through the water refracts or breaks-up into its various wavelengths - each wavelength produces a unique color. That is why you see the various colors of the visible-light-spectrum in a rainbow. It has no impact on the weather, but it does make a person smile and feel good to see one.

The rainbow is light refracted by the drops of water on the atmosphere when rains, and projected in the sky. Sometimes they are made by ice crystals in the high atmosphere.
Maybe they aren't important but they are pretty. An old tradition says is the way God promised the people he would not destroy the world again with a flood. He will look for new and creative ways to destroy it :)
They are important too, because they have pots of gold in their ends.

Light is made up of many colors, red, yellow, blue, purple, green etc. A rainbow is when the light reflects off of the water in the sky causing all of the colors of light to be seperated into red light rays, blue light rays, purple light rays, yellow light rays, green light rays, etc. To put this into a simple experiment you could hang a crystal prism up in the sunlight, once the sunlight reaches this it causes all of the colors of light to reflect off onto the walls in your home, each one in a seperate row, causing a rainbow. The rain in the sky has this same effect when sunlight hits it and that is why you see the seperate colors. The special meaning of a rainbow is it has a promise behind it if you are a Christian. In Genesis Chapter nine vrs 11-17, God speaks to Noah and tells him that He will put a bow in the cloud (Rainbow) as a sign of a covenant between God and the earth, a promise to all that He will never flood the entire earth ever again. The Bible also speaks of the rainbow being over the Throne of God. Unfortunately, it has also been adopted by a group of people that use it as a way to identify their sexual preference.

a rainbow was a sign that the rain had stopped........ the rain of 40 days and 40 nights.... and it is important because...
it was a covenant by god.. indicating that the rain of rains would not happen again.
and there supposed to be a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.....
It just seems that I am always on the wrong end..

The sun shines through droplets of water in the air. These droplets provide a prism effect and produce a rainbow.

It is light refracting. Although, I'm not sure they're actually important.
