I need to find an artist who writes in a poetic way or writes some deep thought provoking lyrics. I have heard Dylans name mentioned quite a bit when I asked this earlier, but If you have any other suggestions please answer.

Well, definitely, without a doubt, Jim Morrison of the Doors! He was extremely poetic, not to mention intelligent! All of their songs had such an astonishing quality to them! The way they were written and played and if you really listen to most of their music, you will really feel inspired! Morrison wrote lots of poetry and was even published! Check their stuff out if you aren't familiar with it! You will see what I mean! Also, Kris Kristofferson had some really thought provoking stuff!

It's NOT David Gilmour. Roger Waters wrote all the lyrics in Pink Floyd. He's definitely up there.

I'd say Leonard Cohen.

Update: Morrison is a good answer but Cohen published books of poetry too. He is also known as the "Canadian Dylan". Check out any of his late 60's or early to mid 70's albums.

Without a shadow of doubt, Dylan is the best of all time. If you want poetic and thought-provoking lyrics, listen to his music.

(Okay Carl J) Roger Waters < John Lennon... but Jim Morrison... = John Lennon? just about! But they are all incredible.

And perhaps Jello Biafra.

Yeah, Dylan is way hippie and junkie, totally old fashioned and pompous. Try David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson, or, on a more cynical level, XTC. Many Bowie's songs have quite smart lyrics, too.
