All movies Jockey for position for a release date. They make most of their money in the first weekend, and if they don't they are in trouble of bombing. If a high budget blockbuster is set to come out at a certain time, you may opt to not come out that same weekend. The traditional best times for movie going are Christmas and the beginning of the summer. That is when most block busters are released. Also kids movies, which are top movie earners as kids go over and over and over. Anyway, kids movies also come out when kids are not in school. The movies that are shooting for awards also have a certain timing to them. That would mean horror movies may tend toward winter/spring like you are suggesting. Horror movies are more likely to not be big budget too, no big writing stretch, no big special effects, no big stars. So they aren't coming out with a big advertising campaign, and therefore even less likely to come out opposite a movie that has a bigger advertising budget than their whole budget.
