If there's one thing I know about, it's zombies. Weapon selection also happens to be me area of expertise.

As for weapons you’d want, most people would think that the biggest, fastest weapon is the best. They are wrong. The only way to kill a zombie is to destroy the brain. Conservation of ammo is second only to survival, and you can survive with a slower weapon. If there was a best gun, it would probably be the semi-automatic rifle. Good range, and one bullet fired every time you pull the trigger. Fast, but not too fast.

With melee weapons, pretty much any sharp object or bludgeon can be used.

Bludgeons are heavier than bladed weapons, as they need the force to crush the skull. Things like sledgehammers and pipes are strong, but are too heavy for those on the move. Weapons like metal baseball bats are good for one or two fights, but start to bend after a while. One of the best bludgeons is the crowbar. Not only can you smash zombie skulls with it, you can also use it the way it was designed to be used.

Among bladed weapons, two of the best ones are the katana and the machete. The katana has good range, and is a strong weapon, but might be harder to find and be expensive. The machete is cheaper and much more common.

Melee weapons to avoid are power tools, like drills and chainsaws. Many people think they are the best weapons against zombies, but they're not. What happens when you run out of fuel? The weapon becomes about as useful as a hand held stereo. Carrying more fuel increases weight, and the chainsaw weighs about ten pounds already. Also the spinning teeth of a chainsaw can't tell the difference between zombie flesh and your flesh.

Also, never use fire. Many people have made this mistake, and most have paid with their lives. While it is one of our greatest weapons against the undead, it is also a great threat to ourselves. Nothing will survive if the fire burns out of control, and keeping control of it is nowhere near as easy as it sounds.

My fingers hurt a little bit from typing all that. If the question is still open tomorrow, I'll finish the list.

A shotgun. The chances of taking off a zombies head with a shot gun are much better then with a katana. Remember you have to destroy the brain to kill a zombie. So using a bladed weapon would be extremely hard. A shotgun however has a great spread so your chances of hitting and destroying the brain is much greater. Plus if you have a crowd of zombies the shotgun will damage those around your target as well. While yes you do have to reload the weapon the shells don't take up much space and some shotguns have the capacity to carry six shots without reloading.

Yes, you are exactly right, katana all the way... Light, reusable, longish range & the head's off in 1 slice. I'd have a tanto (baby-1 foot katana) too, for confined spaces such as indoors. (As for sharpening it.. flesh is soft...It wouldn't go blunt for weeks).

Wear heavy leather clothes & gloves as well, as they can't bite through them and a scarf or two for your neck.

If the zombism is caused by a virus you will have to watch for blood splatters from the sword mind, a face mask & shades would do the job. ;)

Alot of people are going on about guns.. But what about the deal with ammo... Zombies come at you endlessley and I doubt you can get a headshot every time.. How would you carry the ammo..? A backpack would just slow you down, and you'd still run out eventually. Also, what if it jams? What about reloading a magazine if they're all empty and a big crowd is coming at you..? You're dead. :P

(I changed my answer to argue with Dan a bit.. hehe, also proper, traditionally handmade katanas are rare and more expensive.. but they weigh like half as much as the average katana you see out there and are far better balanced.. And finally as for hitting the right spot.. a good slice will cut them in half no matter where it hits, neck or no..).

A katana, or a heftier cutlass or machete for those who prefer simple powerful strokes. We're not talking about skilled blade-work here.

But these aren't area-effect weapons, and a one-at-a-time approach isn't great for major hordes. Dismembering thousands is such a bore.
Now it gets tricky because choice of weapon depends on the cultural origin of the zombies. In the right cases,
Salt (including pumped seawater: also works on film version triffids)
Fire (but anti-fire for Niven and Barne's cargo cult zombies)
Magic-blocking amulets or other devices (Haven zombies)
or targetting the animating magician or voodoo priest.

But since not all the above work on all zombies, intelligence acquisition is vital. If necessary send off an expendable team member or two to perform weapons trials.

I assume you are hunting the current movie version of zombies that are brain eaters as depicted in the movie "Night of the Living Dead." The best weapon is a handgun loaded with hollow point shells, preferable a small caliber automatic with a large magazine.

Chainsaw work, but they use up gasoline quickly and they are not designed to be reloaded in the middle of combat.

A katana is a very nice and sharp blade, but if you have never swung a blade around in combat then try strapping a pair of big phone books to your arm and swing them around for an hour or so. Also the kill shot you are looking for is a difficult one to make; you have to sever the head from the spinal cord at the base of the neck. Middle Age executioners had problems doing that with a target that is tied in place, never mind trying it on combat. Sure you never have to reload a katana, but you need to resharpened it, you need to rebuild the strength to swing it and you need to be trained for at least a few months to be able to use it in combat without being more of a danger to yourself and your allies.

You can say something similar about all muscle-powered weapons like swords, pole arms, maces etc.

Hollow points blast nice big holes in the back of the human head and like to carry a lot of body parts out. If the weapon is a small caliber one then it has a chance of not penetrating the back of the skull, so it spends the rest of its inertia bouncing around inside the skull. This is one thing that makes a .22 such a good weapon for executions.

Yes you have to reload the gun, but firing it is nearly effortless, especially if it is a 9mm or a .38, which has less of a kick than the .45 caliber pistol. I can train you to use a pistol in only one afternoon and you can be a pretty good shot, if you are serious about it. Unlike rifles the pistol can be used at close range and it can be fired before the zombies get close enough to attack you. An automatic doesn’t fire like a machine gun, it fires the bullets one at a time so you can get the best shot out of them, and save on ammo.

Zombies are at their worse when they come at you in mass numbers and when they get in close, sometimes too close to use a katana or a shotgun. I can fire a pistol at someone who is only one foot away, and as long as my ammo holds out I can keep firing it. Ammo is cheap so if I know I am going into a firefight I can get a lot of it. A good gun is expensive, but they are common and easy to find. A katana is an easy to find blade, but finding a quality one is a different matter.

By using hollow point shells, which can be made easily out of normal ammo, I run less of a risk of shooting a team member. Also when I shoot someone in the head they go down for sure on one good hit. You can’t be that sure with a hand weapon like a sword. A sword is much riskier to use because you can only use it up close and within reach of the zombie. I can stand off and use a pistol and when things get too hot I can run away.

M107, make them disappear in a fine pick mist from about 2 miles away, then a Humvee to smash the ones that get to close and a Glock 18 for the ones that get WAY to close and finally about a pound of C4 for when there are to many around you and your out of gas and ammo!

few good ways to get zombies could go with a katana glock combo or could stay up on gunshop roof and snipe them with pretty much limitless ammo or can get raw and gritty and use chainsaw

Movie zombies or voodoo zombies? Movie zombies seem to have really bad reactions to bullets in the brain, while voodoo zombies can be neutralized with rock salt.

A compound bow and arrow plus a baseball bat. You can load it up and fire away. When they go to pull out the arrows, beat them with the bat. Good luck!
