Why do countries join multinational market groups?

It depends. Sometimes it's done to exploit the weaker country's resources or people (ie Nafta). Sometimes its done to bring countries closer together (EEC).

Strictly speaking, in an effort to improve their country's overall trade position , & by so doing improve the economy as a whole as well.
