The free download off Microsoft.com does not work,as it has expired. I need a fully operating program, that I can use as my main OS throughout my house. (and yes, ALL of the PC's and Laptops in my house have the basic specification to run Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate).

Now that Windows Vista is done and selling, there is no legal way to get it for free. Also, even if you got a pirated copy, you would not be able to get updates from Microsoft since you would have the same validation code as someone else, and your computer would therefore be susceptible to virus attacks and such. I would suggest that you hold off for a while since Vista is having more than its fair share of problems and isn't a huge upgrade over XP (in some ways it is a downgrade). Stick with XP until you are sure that it is worth upgrading to Vista. And then look for copies on eBay when the price goes down a bit, but make sure that they are new and unopened. Or check out some of the many free Linux distributions such as Ubuntu.

Microsoft has finished the beta testing of Vista so it won't be available for free any more.

You'll have to buy a copy like everone else who does not want to be a thief or deal in pirated (stolen) copies.

Vista contains a large amount of validation features so you may find that a pirate version (or old beta version) won't work properly even it works at all.

Not legally. If you get a bootleg and a crack you will not be able to get updates which is much needed right now as it is a new system.

Personally I wouldn't upgrade from XP for about another half year. By that time the service packs should be coming out.
