i'm trying to think of ways to help cheer him up and i thought of poetry, but my poems usually aren't very good, so if you know any great poets who specialize in that sort of criteria, please tell me!

uhhhhh....dont use poetry. I had a relative die to, and the best thing my friends did for me is not only talking to me, but listening to what i said and felt.

Poetry doesn't make a person truly happen in times like this. I write poetry too, and when my father passed away, I wrote some, but it made me feel real crummy in the end. Instead, do something spontaneous, like giving your friend a hug, because in times like this, love is the only pick-me-up that a person needs. A hug, a joke, and a cup of cocoa always make the world seem brighter when you feel as if you are treading water in a deep pool of sadness :D

Whatever you do, don't ignore him just because you're afraid of doing or saying the wrong thing. What he needs the most is to know that he has people who care about him. If a poem sounds like the right thing to you, go for it.

Be a good listener. Ask them questions about their loved one to get them started talking. Talking about them helps. Just be there, and don't worry about what you say. Just be there. Listen. Talk. Get them a cup of tea, glass of water, whatever. Just be a friend.

Don't try to cheer them up. They need to grieve!
