I have, but I was on a one week snorkelling holiday, living aboard a boat and we didn't spend too much time on shore.

It is hot and dry - horrendously hot in July/August, so be prepared. There is some rainfall in winter.

You're at the southern end of the Red Sea, so it's good for snorkelling at weekends, but there's not much there in terms of infrastructure so you may need your own transport. Inland you have the vast salt lake of Lac Assal and the old volcanic region at Lac Abbe. There's plenty to explore.

Once colonised by the French you will still see their influence in terms of baguettes in the bakery etc...and people speak French as well as Arabic. However it is a Muslim country so respect local sensibilities and dress conservatively.

Djibouti town is not very big (or not what I saw of it). There's a big market for food shopping but don't expect quite as many supermarkets and stores such as you are probably used to at home. Goods in the supermarkets that do exist are often imported from France so will not be cheap. Because of a lack of home-grown resources, eating out is expensive - Djibouti is actually one of the more expensive countries in Africa.

You'll find that a lot of expats working in Ethiopia come to Djibouti for the weekends. I assume that, like us, you will go via Addis Ababa so you may also share your flight to Djibouti with lots of teachers and voluntary workers.
