Aeroplane is still spelt that way in most of the English speaking world but not in the USA. Perhaps Americans couldn't spell it. Aeroplane was first recorded in 1866 but not meaning a heavier than air craft. That meaning came straight from the French after aeroplanes started flying. "Airplane" was first recorded in 1907. These days it's an airplane in the USA but an aeroplane in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc.

I'm from Asia and we've always been spelling it Aeroplane. I think it's the British spelling.

Answerer 1 is correct. Airplane is how it is spelled in the U.S.A. because they are lazy, and for any correct spelling which looks difficult, they prefer to simplify it.
