Typically, your orthopedic surgeon will x-ray it, and if the hardware has actually failed it is apparent on the x-ray. This rarely happens.

I have often seen people who had a knee replacement some years ago who are having renewed trouble with the knee. Very often, they simply need a "tune up" on their exercises. They have stopped exercising, they have fallen back into bad patterns of movement, and this is putting excess stress on the knee. We get them tuned up, and their pain is reduced.

Get back to the orthopedist so the hardware can be checked, and then have him refer you back to your physical therapist.
