Do Pop stars in Taiwan (Coco, Elva, Jolin) just use the same kind of music, sing the same kind of lyrics, and dance the same?

most pop stars here excell in dancing and are capable of singing well (I think of Jolin, who is an amazing dancer/singer) but lack their own creative sound. I think they get it fed to them by controllers who merely watch what is popular in USA currently and then force the 'artists' to imitate something that is not really their creation. Elva is a sad example of someone who lacks her own sound but rather is programmed. At the beginning of her career she had a strong sound but since then has slutted out and is now merely another pretty face with programmers doing all her thinking for her.

Most music here- think more britney spears ability than jazz ability. If artists here were allowed to create their own sound and the industry itself would accept it rather than dictate it, all of Taiwan's society could benefit and the rest of the world may begin to pay more attention to Taiwan, rather than being a cheesy 'wanna-be' 2nd class Ameri-imitator music culture.

The only band I am aware of that does a good job creating their own sound and lyrics ect. is F.I.R. in Taiwan. ALMOST everyone else is a model that got programmed. Jolin is an example of an exceptional dancer/singer/model in the path of Madonna, but needs to learn independant songwriting and composing skills before she would get the respect established western musicians get. She works hard and is obviously very good about marketing and her 'brand' but, like Madonna, is a lightweight as far as music creation ability goes, and like madonna, will likely not be taken too seriously for music consultation, but rather dance consultation and image creation.

I think they generally do not have a strong value of originality running through the culture yet. I think the audience does but the industry has yet to pick up on it other than taking a loop from a 'new' western song (and paying the producers their due) and then putting chinese lyrics on top. Thats why so many people listen to music from other countries here- more for mining than inspiration. that being said, i think the audience here would be very happy to hear their artists being allowed to use their brains more often.

I don't think so. I often hear and see the pop stars here imitating hip-hop and other types of western music (terribly).

You know they'll sing 80% of a song in Chinese and just throw a couple of terribly pronounced English lines in a cheesy false American accent.

I absolutely think that the Taiwanese have the ability to produce great music, just not by imitating or watering down western music. In Taiwan they have a rich culture - if they could draw from this more as apposed to foreign influences then perhaps they could produce something original.

Today's Taiwanese pop stars mirror early pop stars in America. They change as often as the weather. The ones you mention have a very homogenized style; it's neither unique nor creative. You can hear the same melody and lyrics over and over again.
