I know of some ways to keep rats away from the house like traps and poisons but are their any quicker way to keep them away? I am not sure if it is true that garlic and roses will be used to place in an area where there are rats.

I have mouse problems and I read to use peppermint. Garlic and roses planted near each other in a garden help each other out while growing so that is an interesting combo, but not sure about keeping rats away. Poisons can kill other animals too if the poisoned mouse is eaten. Mice and rats are also very smart (that's why they are used for scientific experiments) so they will learn to stay away from traps once they see there friends get snapped up. I ended up getting some cats (they make nice companions too) if the rodents smell cat they don't want to hang around. Many on Yahoo agree a cat is a good solution. One person wrote that they didn't like cats and the response was choose one cat or mice. My cats are to new to say if it has been effective. I still have snap traps out and haven't caught any for a few days after getting 16 in three days, and I still spot one here and there, yuck. D-con works but DEFINITELY need to make sure kids, cats and dogs can't get to it, because it can kill them too if they eat it. And if a cat or dog eats a rat that was killed by it, they could die too. Rats don't see well, so they will hug the walls when they are running around. Look for droppings and signs they are using a particular path and set the traps there. Putting a trap in the middle of the floor won't work well.

Clear the area around the house of debris and tall weeds or bushes. Rats don't like the wide open spaces. Also you might go to the animal shelter and get you a couple of hungry outside cats that are used to fending for themselves.

Get a cat and don't leave your doors open or ajar. They want to come in where it is warm and they can find food. Field mice are much like this. Make sure that you don't have clutter in your house or they will take up residency, they love messy places where they can easily hide.
