Yes, they move any time the engine is turning, which turns when the wheels are moving.
A supercharger compesses the air, which puts more air into the cylinder. Same with a turbo.
Auto transmissions don't have enough gears for that much weight.

yeah they always move when the car is on, cause they still have to maintain combustion while the car is running... When your idling the engine is still running and it's still burning gas not as much but it's still running and the pistons will move all the time when the car is on...
Turbo Charging and Supercharging increases the air that goes into your cylinder during the intake so it boosts up your combustion rate...
There are no automatic transmissions for Semi's because a automatic transmission isn't built to withstand the weight and pressure a manual one can... You need that many gears to get any kind of get up and go if you had an auto trans on a semi you'd run for like 10 minutes and you'd need a new tranny...

OF COURSE THEY DO!! You say you know a little about car engines...ha I'd say you know NOTHING about car engines!!!!That question is like asking:"Does my heart still pump even though I'm holding my breath?" As soon as you turn the ignition and start the car, the pistons are moving. If the pistons weren't moving when the car is supposed to be on, then the car wouldn't be on. The combination of the piston compressing the air, igniting the fuel in the cylinder, and the controled explosion it makes, all make the engine run. Pushing the gas pedal just feeds more fuel into the cylinder for a bigger controlled explosion, thereby creating more energy,or in this case, creating more power. I may not be exact in the sequence of things here but this is the basics of "engines 101"

Yes,the pistons still move as long as the engine is running.The gas pedal only dictates how much gas and air is entering the engine,thus how fast the pistons are moving(RPMs).The second question,superchargers take in more air from outside,compress it and heat it through the act of compression.Then it is mixed with fuel and thrown into the cylinders and ignited for much more power.Your family car is probably normally-aspirated (not supercharged) and has around 200-300 horsepower versus a supercharged drag racer which can have close to 8000 horsepower.
3rd question:Some semis have automatic transmissions these days.

Yes they do. You need to produce combustion to keep your engine running, so the cycle never ends until you shut the engine off. The plus sparks, lights the fuel/air mixture, forced the piston out and contributes to the rotation. Of course stepping on the gas pedal will increase the mixture and combustion, making your car move. If your car is still engaged in gear and you take your foot off the brake, it rolls forward because of the small amount of combustion taking place (lower combustion=less rpm).
A supercharger forces additional air and fuel into the engine. This occurs when the engine is under full throttle or under load, not at normal cruise or most normal driving. A large displacement engine makes more power than a small displacement engine because it can convert larger amounts of fuel and air into energy. A supercharger allows a smaller engine to do the same thing but only when extra power is actually needed.
Semis usually have auto transmissions because their load weights can vary widely. A manual transmission provides the driver with greater control of the semi under various loads.

The pistons start moving with the start of the engine ,{no engine start without them moving}, even when not pressing the pedal.
About supercharging u conclude it from the name it charges the air at very high speed and pressure to the motor so the burning process goes quicker and the car goes faster.
every single model has an automatic transmission even the buses.

the pistons have to move to power the engine.
set the parking brake. put it in nuetral or park.
get out with the engine running, if it is, the pistons are going up and down, unless it's a wankel.
supercharging compresses the air entering the combustion chamber. i'm told it takes 14 parts air to 1 part fuel for combustion. if you add more air, you can add more fuel, thus more power.
allison has been building automatic trannies for big trucks for years. i just overheard a conversation of 2 truckers talking about getting better fuel economy by leaving the shifter in Drive.

As long as the engine is running, of course they are moving!
Supercharging adds extreme air and pressure to the engine = more air=morefuel=more HP
Semi trucks would blow a trans up if it was auto, they need to be geared low to take off. Thats why they have many gears, only a manual or manual/electronic trans

and yes they do make semi trucks with automatic transmissions
