Ballisticaly the .40S&W and the .45ACP are pretty much neck and neck. Certainly there are differences but not enough to be very meaningful. In truth shot placement is far more important than which of those two calibers you are shooting.

Premium ammo these days will give reliable expansions and penitration in either round. But I will say that in cold weather conditions, the .45ACP has a bit of an edge. The reason is that pistols are really underpowered when compared to a rifle and they depend on expansion to do enough damage to stop someone in a timely manner. In cold climates eveyone, including the bad guys, ususally wear heavy or layered clothing. A hollowpoint will typically fill with this material and then will not expand. When it comes to non expanding ammo, bigger around is always better. So in that instance the .45 has a slight edge.

But again, nothing makes up for shot placement. And there is no such thing as a magic bullet. If you have a legitimate, legal reason to shoot someone, then you have a reason to keep shooting them until they stop doing what ever it was that made you shoot them in the first place.

It depends on your definition of "chopping someone down". A .45 will transfer more force when it strike someone, but a .40 cal may cause as much, if not more damage because the projectile is traveling faster. Good luck

40 to the heart and a 45 in the head, about the same result.

Knockdown on firearms differs because the velocity will vary for each calibre at different ranges. At 50 feet, the .45. At 50yards, the 40.

45 with hollow points.

Place a drop of water in the top and cover with paraffin.

It's not very legal but incredibly effective.
