Just be compassionate, whichever you choose. They both offer rewards.

Only the people who really know you well can give good and
thorough advice and I would encourage you to consult them -
which you probably already have done.

However, the answer would depend on several factors:
1. Where is the greatest need?
2. To whom, animals or the elderly, do you best relate?
3. In which field do YOU feel that you are most qualified and
in which field will YOU receive the greatest sense of fulfillment.
4. Your age. The older you are, the more likely you are to be able
to work well with the elderly...yet young adults are effective
here also if they are truly concerned, have an open mind
and have the ability of understanding where the elderly
are coming from.

Best of everything because both fields are worthwhile and
rewarding.

I'd go with animals. Working with the elderly can be very frustrating and stressful. Too often are they inappreciative or incapable of even understanding what is going on. Animals can at least bring you some joy and express some appreciation, they're also more fun. This is all just my opinion of course.
