I pulled out the cabinents above my stove to open up my kitchen as it was all boxed in. I am now ready to replace the range hood, but want to set it higher then it was. I have a high powered RECIRCULATING type. Not a direct vent. What is the maximum height I can get away with? On the web I saw a "RECOMMENDED" height of 30". I want to try and stretch this to 38"-40." Will it pass inspection if I go to sell my house.

Out of curiosity, what is the maximum height a direct vent with a powerful motor can be set at? Is it the same as a recirculating type?

Thanks!

A recirculating vent doesn't really do much good. The filter in it may remove a little bit of the grease vapors, but most of it is blown back into the room. And it won't remove any smells.

However, 30" is the minimum distance from the top of the range (usually 36" above the floor) to the bottom of the cabinet above the range, not including the range hood. This is for fire safety, in case you have a flareup on the range. You can go to 38"-40" with only a slight drop in performance. The link below gives technical information for one brand of direct vent range hoods with large motors. Their recommendation is for a height of 33"-36" above the cooking surface.

I believe the 30" is the minimum height from stove top. You will have to check for code for your area if there is one about the min/max distance for vent. I have seen vents placed very high up in some custom kitchens.
