I went to Marine boot camp right out of high school. In high school I had a little bit of a temper problem didn't want to be told what to do...all the good stuff that goes along with being a teenager. Anyway...the way bootcamp is designed is to break you down and make you realize that YOU are totally insugnifficant. There really is no YOU there is only WE. That is why they shave your heads so you are all the same. They stip that individualality right out of you. It changed me and I am forever grateful. Within the first week you will realize all the things you took for granted. Just going to the bathroom, TV, Your whole life is scripted. You don't do nothing unless you are told to. I have watched grown men piss themselves because they were told they couldn't use the head. But I seen how it can only change you if you want to be changed. I saw the tough guys come and try to resist and they are the ones that end up trying to do all kinds of crazy stuff to get out like hanging themselves cutting there wrists jumping off the balconies....it is not for everyone especially the weak minded. They will weed you out and if they don't think you are Marine material they sure as hell are not going to give you a rife with a 180 rounds of ammo and a vest full of grenades. At 14, I think it would only make him worst as well. They can only do so much. They aren't going to beat him into submission. Chances are he will just pull the nutball card (act totally despondant) and they will send him packing. If he manages to get through it which I am sure it is a lot more scaled down from my expierence, he will be a cocky little terd with a huge head. My nephew is the same age and he is acting like a little terd as well. I did to when I was that age I luckily changed mostly in part from what the Marines taught and instilled in me.

I dont think he will come out of it any worse than he is now. It will most likely help him. I am in the Navy and went through their bootcamp. I wasn't in trouble but I saw some bad people turn completely around. It teaches you alot of respect. It will make him grow up alot quicker. Bootcamp helped me alot too. The fact that I even got through it made me feel alot better about myself. It makes you stronger too. Its all a mental thing and it depends on how you take it.

I've heard enough horror stories to be skeptical. It depends if it's a straighten-them-boys-out bootcamp or if it's a military school. Frankly, I think he would be better in a military school, where they would whip him up into shape without the real possibility of abuse.
And yes, it can change you, but depending on where you go, it might not be for the better.

It can be a wake up call to some kids. If the more traditional methods of controlling a kid dont work out. It could very well do some good.

Depends on where he gets sent.
A good bootcamp will straighten him out.
Some just add up to detention centers that act as pre-prison training.

At his age you only have a short time to make a change that will help him grow up and become an adult. I think he deserves a chance to go and try to gain some adult skills. He will also learn to respect authority and to stand up to others, and keep himself in line. Best of luck to all of you!!

A Wilderness Camp Program sounds like a better alternative to boot camp. You might want to check it out and give the info to your parents. Good luck to your brother.

It would depend on the camp. Have your parents been there? Is it just a kind of punishment or does it teach life skills?
