About a month ago I lifted my backpack full of all my textbooks to go sell back to the bookstore at my college. I lifted it with my left arm and instantly hurt the muscle behind/under my shoulder. It has been 6 weeks since that happened. And now I am back to weight lifting and I used to do 120lbs on a should machine but it hurts my left shoulder muscle so much that I can only do about 30lbs with out pain. Any ideas how to heal whatever is hurt? And by the way if i matters I am a male, 6 foot 3 inches, 164lbs, and healthy.

You may have a serious injury here, or it may be something that a physical therapist or ATC can deal with fairly easily.

If you are in college, sometimes there is a training room where a PT or ATC will look at you for free. For sure, take advantage of that if available.

If you see your family doctor or student health, be sure to ask for referral to PT. Your PT is the biomechanics and movement science specialist on your health care team - he or she can help you get to the bottom of this problem, and get you exercising in a way that will help you build strength safely.

Go to APTA.org, click on "Find a PT", and search your home area.

Good Luck!
