The check engine light came on, and I took it to Auto Zone as suggested by a friend. I tried to Google the code they gave me, but I couldn't find anything. I can't afford the mechanic's right now, and I need to now if it's safe to drive for a bit or if I should be taking the bus to school. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I went back and looked at the paper they gave me at Auto Zone and the code is 1404. Sorry for the confusion.

ok it doesn t come up under the venture van, but the p1401 code is for manufacturer control auxiliary emissions control. i ve never seen this code come up for this van. so be sure this is the correct code. aftermarket scanners will some times give you a faulty code. take it the dealership and ask if someone could just read the code with gm s scan tool named the tech 2. it more than likely is a p1404 code which deals with the egr system, in which there is an updated calibration for the pcm which has to be preformed only at the dealership. good luck.

the 1401 code is for the transmission. thats why nowone is finding it for an engine code. It means the torque convertor is in the stuck on possition. take it to a tranny shop and have them reset the codes. there are probably more than one but auto zones crappy scanners won't show that!!! Do you ever feal it shift hard from 1st to 2nd this a sign that goes along with this code. the chevy venture is a piece as well as the transport and the siloette(yr models 1997 to 2003). they all have the same 3100 or 3400 engines which are crap and the transmissions are all the same until 2004. After that year chevy changed some things and this is a decent vehicle again. I have worked on several of these motors and trans. they all show and do the same things which is generally inbetween 100.000 and 140.000 miles. These motors also have intake manifold gasket troubles somtimes you will notice your antifreeze getting low but you can't seem to find the leak that is because it is leaking into the cylinder and is being burnt. My advice to you is to trade it off before the motor blowsor the tranny gets worse. Reseting the code is only a 2 day or 2 week fix.. But this is why I like chevys so well they keep mechanics like me in business...

Are you sure it is DTC P1401? I looked at the DTC list from 2000 to 2002 and there is no listing for one; p1404 which is EGR related does exist. FYI, as far as Auto zone is I am concern with, most parts they sell I would be weary about installing on my vehicles such as alternators, starters, etc.

That will give you a list of the codes, but like you, I didn't see one for 1401.

Call a Chevy dealership and talk to the service department. They may be willing to help you out and tell you what it is.
