I remember getting a good look at Hayley's Comet when it passed by in 1986... I was about 8 years old. It turns up every 76 years (a bit like the British trains). I just wondered if anyone else here remembers seeing the comet?

I agree that it didn't put on a spectacular show in 1986 - at the time, I was far more impressed with the fact that I might not ever see it again. If I do, I'll be 84. It's the ''once in a lifetime'' nature of Haley's Comer that I found so interesting.

Yes, I remember it quite vividly. I was in Assam in India and it was a wonderful sight day after day, i mean night after night for several weeks. I was about 35 years at that time. I am sure, I won't be around when it comes back on its revisit.

I do. I wasn't impressed. My grandparents took us on a cruise to Tahiti to see it. I'm very fair, and didn't dare go out in the sun, even with sunblock, so I watched Romancing the Stone in the ship's theater over and over and over.

At night I would sit up and watch the stars. Halley's comet wasn't much. Hale-Bopp about ten years later was much more impressive. But I did love seeing the Southern Cross and the Magellenic Clouds.

Good on you - you managed to see it. I live in Melbourne Australia, and was 18 at the time. I climbed up onto the roof with a set of binoculars, and didn't see a great deal. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that I'll be able to see it again..

I saw it a long time ago...it was more star-like if anything (and I didn't have a scope at the time). I've since had the chance to see Hyakatuke and Hale-Bopp...which were far more spectacular just with the naked eye alone.

I remember trying really really hard to find it and us never being sure if we were looking at the right thing. I was about the same age and am hoping i live long enough for a second go at it. :)

Yes I saw it when I was 22...... If I want to see it again I have to live to be 98!! It'll be tough, but I'm going to give it my best, considering the alternative.

A little, I was 10 and had a hard time staying up, If I remember right my mom drove me around so I could see it. LOL, you just brought up such vague memories I don't even know if they are real. Thanks.
