First of all, making a drawing of a photo that looks nice is pretty hard. I think the easiest way to convert it correctly is to use a grid transfer. You take the photo and make a grid all over the whole thing and then make one on the paper you're drawing on that's bigger/smaller, depending on the size of the drawing vs. the photograph. Once you do this you can see what is in each individual square and put it into the now ones pretty accurately. Just get the lines in, and details can come later. Using this method always makes for a good scale; so it matches the picture. For shading I just use my eye, but it would probably work with the grid too, if you blend the squares well enough. An example would be to draw a 1 inch by 1 inch grid on a 10X8 photo and a 2inch by 2 inch grid on a 20X16 (double) you would come out with a proportioned drawing, NO tracing required!!

theres a charcoal filter in photoshop.. it converts portraits to like pencil drawings.

there is an excellent free program call infranview.type that word into search.go download it.open the program open the file of your picture,next go to the image pull down menu click on it ,go down to convert to grayscale..this is the fastest way to get closest to a pencil drawing.it's free,has free plug ins, can use photoshop effects and is so simple to use.you'll be amazed with it........!!

if you can mess around with photoshop...there are different filters that will give you various effects...actually there are a ton of them....there are "artistic" ones like pencil or something like that...this will give you an idea of values, shading, etc.
