If it is pipes you could have air in them, which is easy to fix just use a special key to open one end of the rad, and that the air out don't open it to much, It could be that the pipes are not fixed correctly which means when something like water starts to move in the pipe it can then move it, depending where the pipes are it could even be the wind, but there are a number of things around the house that can make a noise like that, doors, floorboards, even the fridge, however i went to a house a couple of weeks ago and there problem was a playful spirit who did not want to leave and to make them aware he banged around, but I don't know what your believes are, if you think it is a spirit, and there could be lots of other things to think of before you go down that path, but do as you did before talk to it, and tell it to leave you alone, it means you no harm, but just say to stop scaring you, you could also say that they can stay if they stop, but if they keep on you will have them moved on.
Good Luck
Love & Peace

They would check for trapped air.
Trapped air can happen when the weather changes and often when it is cold. The water is thrown arount the trapped air bubbles making it smack against the pipes and resulting in the banging you are hearing.
Other theories are that a small animal or peice of debries(branches..etc) have found themselves into the pipes and may be being moved about by passing water, or ice- if its so cold, some ot the water may have frozen and the ice may be banging about the pipes.
You are perfectly logical and in you right mind to feel cautious, once bitten twice shy- but the more you worry, the more you strss yourselp out.

Airlocks or circulating pump problems - get a plumber in to service your boiler and check the system.
Pay attention during the day also - often the knocking is still going on, just masked by the noises of daily living.
Check for animal signs - check the outside perimeter of your house for any possible avenues of entry (small gaps around pipes or walls), and check cupboards and attic spaces and basements for droppings or shredded paper or funny smells. Try leaving some food to see if it's taken.
Good luck!

Pipe usually hammer and creak due to expansion. As hot water begins to circulate through cold pipes, the pipe will expand and move against its hangers and the wood framing. 'Hammer' is normal too, but if it gets too aggressive/noisey, call in a heating repairman to check out the heating system.
Good luck.

The wrong piping configuration can cause an effect called "water hammer" sometimes. You may need to change the piping.
