what does "bon appetit" mean?

me and my friends were at olive garden a fancy french paris, type of luxarius resturant ok anyways the people brought out our food and i ordered spaghetti. the waitress said bon appetit

Literally it means "Good appetite", but the waitress basically meant "Have a nice meal" or "Enjoy your meal"...etc.

It loosely means "enjoy your meal." Literally it means, good apetite.
