23 is the number sacred to the Discordians, an invented Chaos religion that was developed in the 1960's in Berkeley. Originally mimeographed handouts, this was developed into the book The Principia Discordia, or How I Found the Goddess and What I Did to Her When I Found Her.

23 is sacred because the numbers add up to 5, which is sacred to the goddess Discordia or Eris. (You may remember Eris as having tossed a golden apple engraved Kallisti--"For the fairest"--into the meeting hall of the great gods, starting a fight between Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena. They picked a man named Paris to decide who was actually fairest. Each attempted to bribe Paris. Hera offered to make him king of Europe and Asia. Athena offered him wisdom and skill in battle. Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful woman on Earth, Helen of Troy. And we all know how that ended.)

By the way, 50 + 23 = 73 = 365/5. Discordians have proposed a year of 5 73-day months.

Despite the use of names like Malaclypse the Younger and Fenris the Unwashed, the founders of Discordianism were Robert Anton Wilson, famed author of the Schroedinger's Cat Trilogy and Bob Shea, who together wrote the Illuminatus Trilogy.

You can read The Principia Discordia online at http://www.principiadiscordia.com/book/1.php. Be careful. It's definitely not for children.
