I seem to remember a gay congregation near Dowtown Oakland on the West side, also another near 40th and Telegraph. Can anyone shed light on this for me?

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but the closest I could find to 40th and Telegraph were the St. Paul Lutheran Church ELCA and the National Association - Catholic Gay Ministry. The St. Paul Lutheran Church expressly states that they welcome LGBT people, and the Catholic Gay Ministry is self-explanatory (though it's technically in Berkeley). Both are between 2 and 4 miles from 40th and Telegraph. Their information is below:

St Paul Lutheran Church ELCA
1658 Excelsior Ave
Oakland, CA 94602
(510) 530-6333
www.stpaul-lutheran.com

Natl Assn-Catholic Gay Mnstry
1798 Scenic Ave, Berkeley, CA 94709
(510) 849-8281

There are several churches near 40th and Telegraph in Oakland. Try the link I've placed below, which should show a list and map. If the link doesn't work for you, you can go to local.yahoo.com and enter "40th and Telegraph, Oakland, CA" in the location field and "churches" in the search field to get the results.

Hope this helps you! :)
