There's a seal messed up inside the tank - the water inside the tank is trying to drain, and because the water level keeps going down, your toilet keeps trying to increase it by adding more water. Can be terrible for a water bill! You can try jiggling the handle after you've flushed - sometimes the seal just needs to be readjusted. Otherwise, check out Home Depot or your local hardware store. You can buy new insides for your tank cheaply and install it yourself.

Take the top off the tank and check it out. The flapper is not sealing and water is leaking into the bowl from the tank. This can happen sometimes if the chain from the handle to the flapper gets hung up or twisted.
It's probably time to call a plumber or go to a home supply store with the brand name of your toilet and get a repair kit. Good luck

take the top off the tank and then flush the toilet. You will see a flapper valve lift up to let the water down into the bowl, then the flapper falls down over the hole. You can run your finger around the opening to clean off any scum, and do the same on the flapper edges . This is maybe all you need to fix the problem.....otherwise you may need to adjust the flapper so it falls down properly over the hole to make a good seal. I am guessing there was just a little bit of gumbo on the sealing surfaces.

Did you check for leaks? Check your toilet's water tank. Open the lid or cover on top. Usually there is a chain with a spring. If the water overflows onto a tube and never stops flowing then that's where water (and your money) goes. Maybe it needs tightening. Water should stop flowing once the exact level is reached. Observe then do trial and error. I solved my problem with my toilet just by observing how things work. Good luck!

Take the top off the toilet and look for the pipe that goes down into the toilet (the overflow pipe) if water is going down that pipe, you will need to bend the float arm so that the water stops filling the tank sooner, if thats not it see the other posts about the seal.

Sometimes the tank fill valve gets small bits of gravel in it from unfiltered water, preventing the water from shutting completely off when the tank is full.
I had to shut off the water supply, take apart the valve and clean it out, reassemble it, and it worked fine after.

You need a new seal. The leak will definetly run up your water bill. You can buy it at any home improvement store (home depot, lowe's, probably even wal-mart) and it's easy to replace.

either your rubber seat "flapper" is not sealing properly or the float level is to high and the water is going into the overflow pipe. a new toilet tank repair kit is inexpensive and easy to install.

blair gave the perfect answer. easiest to just change the flapper that lifts when you flush the handle. even easier to take it out before you go to home depot and bring it with ya for a perfect match.
