Hi! I have thirteen one month old baby guppies that are becoming very active! They don't seem to be crowded but I think they would like more room to explore and swim. I was wondering if I should get a larger tank such as a ten gallon tank? I would appreaciate your thoughts and thankyou for taking your time and answering this question! *guppylover*

Yes, get another tank and you may want to separate males and females, I had to. I have two 60 gallon tanks (you may want 10-20 gallon tanks) with around 80-90 guppies total, all born here. You don't want more than one inch of fish per gallon of water (that's why I set up second tank). This will keep nitrogen levels down so they have healthy water to live in. Now I have females in one tank and males in another. When I want more fish I select which males I want to breed and acclimate them to female tanks water and add them for a few weeks. In about a month you will have new fry from your favorite males. When they are old enough to tell if they are male move them to the male tank. Have fun they are so cool to watch grow and develop color. Also someone mentioned water temp and sex of fry and I keep my tanks at 76 and have the same amount of males and females.

Guppies are so pretty, I love them too. They are also how I ended up with 3 ten gallon tanks, 1 five gallon and 1 one gallon tank. Finally...with one 2 gallon, one 5 gallon and two 55 gallon tanks.

Do you plan to keep all of them? Have you found a pet shop or someone who also wants some of your fry, someone that will take some of the excess?

Also, do you have them with the parents? They're prone to inbreeding (with their family members), creating many with abnormalities.

So to answer your question from my own personal experience, yes. You will need another tank for the fry or the parents.

Something else I learned was that their gender is determined by the temperature of the tank water. I don't remember which way was male or female. But I kept my tank at 76 degrees and always had way more females than males.

guppies are easy fish to care for... and fish have very simple needs....

keep the tank clean...

just remember.. technically a good rule to follow for fish.. is

one inch of fish to one gallon of water...

so.. in getting them a bigger tank.. and provided that all 13 live.. and grow to be at least an inch long.. you would soon outgrow the 10 gal tank.

and also.. fish like to school... so.. they don't feel ... and definitely aren't crowded.
