I currently play the violen (horribly), so that might help me a little bit...but I'm still not quite sure how to get started. I have all the equpiment...the amp, picks, tuner...and of coarse the eletric gutair, but stuck on what to do. Please help with any tips of whatever, thanks =)

Google some tabs for your guitar. Take the tabs and learn to read them.

Then once you know how to read them, try strumming at various speeds. Then some strumming patterns. And then try out a song. Choose something fairly easy...like "Seven Nation Army" by Audioslave. You don't want to jump into hard stuff like "Radio" by Alkaline Trio quickly...it sounds easy, but trust me it's not.

Make sure you pick a song you like, too, so you enjoy playing it.

Hey, glad to hear you're getting into guitar. I started about 6 months ago, so I know what you're going through.

Ok, you've got your gear, that's good. Tune 'er up, and let's go.

First thing you need to do is learn some basic guitar chords. The first ones you will need to learn is: C, G, D, D-minor, E, E-minor, A, and A-minor. That'll get you started. Many books have photos of the proper finger positions.

Next, you need to learn to do some simple strumming exercises. Nothing major, just basic stuff.

The next thing you can learn is how to change chords. That takes some practice, but don't get frustrated, you'll get it.

You can go to www.guitarvision.com and they have an animated guitar, with most music on it, and it will show you finger positions, strum patterns, and will have the music to accompany you. It's pretty good, and the service is free.

Try that. Practice for at least 20-30 mins per day if you can. You don't want to do too much more than that, or you'll burn out and get frustrated with it. Don't expect to be doing hammer-on's, pull off's, and shredding overnight. It takes lots of practice. Just hang in there.

Best wishes!

An easy way to get started is to look up some easy tabs on the internet. it may take a little while to find and song easy enough to learn but it just takes patience. i've been playing for 3 years now and i'm still learning the tool of the trade. well anyway, i can't think of anything else. good luck.

You have many ways to learn. One is go to your local Libarary and get some books that can show you the cords and where to place you fingers. You can also go to the web and get some cds on how to play the guitar. You could find someone local that knows how to play and have them teach you the basics of the cords. From then on keep going and don't stop. Good luck.
