Can the magnets be replaced on the back of the flywheel on a gas engine that uses a stator or is the only option to replace the flywheel. It is on a 25hp Kohler electric start.

I usually don't take chances of epoxying magnets back on.. Replace flywheel.. Too much of a chance of it exploding in operation! Remember, it turns about 3,600 rpm in normal operation (Mowing, etc)

I would also recommend you stick with regular gas and a product called StaBil which prevents gas from getting stale and varnishy when the mower is stored or unused for long periods. Old gas can get varnishy within a month, doesn't ignite as well, can gum up and clog the passages in the carb which can cause hard starting...might be time to rebuild it or replace.Try adding a fuel system cleaner like Gumout to clean out any deposits/varnish. Do you currently drain the gas for storage or use Stabil product? Does the motor have a primer bulb for starting? A bad primer bulb diaphram can cause problems. Priming the engine adds a little fuel to the carb throat for starting rather than waiting for it to be sucked out of the fuel bowl under vacuum. Check the choke linkage/operation...always start with choke closed unless engine is warmed up. Take off the air filter and observe how the choke operates....make sure it closes fully. And yes...worn rings/low compression can also cause hard starting/running issues.

If the magnets are giving you problems, have you tried to steel wool them clean and get the rust off? I've had luck doing that before. Good luck

Fordman has a good answer, otherwise change it.
