well, i don't know about romantic (in the sense you mean), but eternal "Serge Gainsbourg" is, in my eyes, one of the best french musician/artist of its times. Check out this album: L' histoire de Melody Nelson. You may like it.

I love the Carla Bruni CD "Quelqu'un m'a dit". C'est très romantique et très facile à trouver. Similar artists are Keren Ann, Benjamin Biolay, Coralie Clément, and Helena- all great. Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy are the ultimate-chic for "chanson."

Other great French artists include Tryo, Kyo, Louise Attaque, Camille, Calogero, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Anaïs, Florent Pagny, K-Maro, MC Solaar, Zedba, Diam's, etc. My students love the poppier songs by Grégory Lemarchal, Jenifer, Madame Kay, DePalmas, etc.

I always check out the French radio stations for new music. Try this website: http://mikesradioworld.com/eu_fr.html

If you are looking for free music and like indie rock, go to www.mintyfresh.com and download the Je ne te connais pas EP from the Prototypes. For other free music, you may have to use illegal means... :)

I listen often to Mitsou Gélinas. She's québécoise. Her music is typically american pop sounding with a lot of sexy singing in French. There are two of her cd's that I rate as her best, « Le Tumulte, La Tendresse, La Sérénité » and « Ya Ya ».

Another unknown is Allan Théo. His first cd « Emmène-moi » sounds just like the typical american pop of '98, his 2nd cd « Soupir » has that american acoustic-rock-folk sound, and his recently released 3rd cd « Théo » sounds like early eighties hard rock. Of the three, « Soupir » is the best. The french sung sounds more french when it's not being screamed over the music.

Romanctic French songs... Hmm...

I don't listen to that much French music, but Willy Denzey has a couple of nice songs. He's an R&B artist, if you're into that. "Willy Denzey - Au Firmament" is kind of romantic.

Other than that, I mainly listen to French rap. France has a very good rap scene, specifically when it comes to rapcore. For rapper and rap groups, I'd recommend La Caution, Relic, Rohff, and 113.

Yves Montand is probably my favorite.

Serge Gainsbourg is the coolest. For romantic, get old albums from the 60s and 70s, before he started doing more Carribean and reggae-oriented stuff.

Françoise Hardy is very good.

Edith Piaf, who also discovered Yves Montand.

Jacque Brel.

For more modern but romantic, Céline Dion has French albums. I personally don't like Céline much, but she is very popular, so you might.

All of these are legends; you can't really go wrong with any of them.

Some good French artists are, in no order: Dumas (often known as Steve Dumas), Corneille, Les Trois Accords, Yelo Molo, Thomas Fersen, Les Rita Mitsoukos, & Carla Bruni. You can download them on LimeWire or by torrents (illegally), or through the itunes store or other places mentioned on their websites (legally).

I love French music as well!
You should check out the Putu Mayo CD's.
I bought FRENCH CAFE and PARIS.
(I like every song on those 2 CD's)
Whenever I listen to them, it's like I'm really in Paris! :)

Do you prefer or are you more interested in French songs from Western Europe or the ones from Québec (Eastern Canada)?

There`s one French singer from France who is absolutely brilliant. He has the soul of a poet and his name is Francis Cabrel.

Yves Duteil has a lovely warm voice too and mainly sings with his acoustic guitar.

When I was growing up back in the 70`s, I used to listen to Joe Dassin a lot but he died in the South Pacific (Tahiti) back in 1980. I even saw him in concert shortly before he died; an experience I`ll never forget!

I`ve always been a huge fan of Mylène Farmer, Vanessa Paradis, Étienne Daho, Niagara, Jean-Jacques Goldman, Daniel Balavoine, Michel Berger and Patrick Bruel, among others.

I also like Serge Gainsbourg, Jane Birkin and their daughter Charlotte.

Jacques Brel is a classic. Not to my taste but he was extremely popular back in the old days.

So were Françoise Hardy, Jacques Dutronc and Serge Reggiani.

My mom used to really enjoy listening to Yves Montand.

On the other hand, if you prefer French-Canadian singers, you should definitely check out Harmonium, Beau Dommage, Gilles Vigneault, Robert Charlebois, Carole Laure, Angèle Arsenault, Céline Dion, etc.

The list is endless!
