Mammals grow one set of teeth at a time. Humans have 2 sets, juvenile and adult. So do dogs. Elephants have 4 sets of teeth; when one wears out, the next comes in. When the 4th set wears out, the elephant will not be able to eat anymore, and it dies. Of course by this time their age is showing in other ways too. And elephants have been known to feed a herd member that can't eat by itself.
