Yes, your HDD is affected by formatting. Simply put, when you format a hard drive, you wipe off any existing information and files from that drive in order to prepare it for either an operating system, or as a formatted drive for containing files.

When you format your hard drive you erase every thing, so you can reinstall everything from scratch, sometimes it's the best way to fix a cluttered hard disc.
