I am trying to make it work for my 12 year old. He needs a computer to do his homework on. It's a Compaq presario 5000 series with windows 98 SE. I have the recovery disk, but whenever I try to impliment it, the computer spits it out. I am a novice but not afraid to try things. help.

Hmmm... My Compaq Presario recovery disks do about the same thing.. they wipe out the HD but then leave it empty and don't install the system on it.. I had to get a Win98SE disk from someone that tossed out their old computer.. and not all of my hardware works correctly.. had to download some drivers from Hewlett Packard (who bought out Compaq).. I'm still working on getting the network settings correct...

good luck!

unplug all peripherals like remote CD drives etc. My Dell won't even boot up with the peripherals in it, you may have the same glitch.

Since the floppy doesn't seem to be working, put the 98 CD in and turn it on.

I've re-installed 98 a number of times, and it doesn't erase the files, but I'm loading it from cabs. Hopefully it'll work the same on yours.

I'm not the brightest light when it comes to computers, beyond this I would have to take it in and say "Here', fix it". But don't go to Comp USA, they've had my XP computer since October!

I merely were given over a similar problem. My workstation used to assert that and make a clicking noise like a blinker being became on. turn on your workstation and carry down a key till an mistakes message seems that announces key stuck. hit f4 for set up and examine out to bypass to possibility-free mode or restoration the defaults.
