There is nothing wrong with speaking slang as long as you know the proper place and time to use it. You can use slang around your friends but you should know that slang is not appropriate around your boss or co-workers or while interviewing for a job.

As a small business owner, I have been called racist for not hiring someone because they speak like that, the fact of the matter is the color of their skin has nothing to do with why they didn't get the job. The fact that they didn't care enough about the interview to speak properly so what will they do when dealing with my customers?
It happens all the time keep the ghetto speak in the ghetto it has no place in a proffesional environment.
I think they are just silly for thinking you can get anywhere but the ghetto when that is you present yourself, but I guess it is easier to file lawsuits and scream racism than to speak English like an American.

What Amber said. If you refuse to ever speak in a way that normal people can understand, you are cutting yourself a short rope. A time and a place for everything. Work is a time and place to be proffessional. I've walked out of a business or two and spent my money somewhere else because the person doing the business couldn't speak so I could understand him after asking three times. Three times is not too excessive. If he only wants clients that can speak in code, he won't get my cash.

Well it depends where you use it and when. If you use it at work that would be improper and unprofessional, but among friends is ok. I dont see what that has to do with getting ahead in life because u dont have to speak it to a prospective employer, business propestive, etc. Some people if they grow up on it will be hard to not speak it rarely.

Language is not an obstacle if one expect to get ahead in life as far as one can speak & understand the current language too. Of course a good hold on language is much beneficial.

some people, especially children, dont really have a choice. the media portrays things through television, radio, and video games, so when kids see their favortie actor or singer speaking slang, taking about sex, gangs, and violence, they say it too. They think it's cool and want to be like their idol.
it's also passed down through family. When you're around a parent and they say something, the child ends up speaking that way also.
As for adults...i have no idea why they choose to do that. I mean, harmless slang like, "yo" "dude" "chillin" stuff like that, it's ok, but when they start to say things that make people sound uneducated, it's gets really stupid.

lol funny that you should ask. Us black people at times just can't get a break. If we speak proper English we're considered by our fellow blacks as stuck up, sididdy, trying to be white, or just plain not black enough. However, if we speak slang to fit in with our race we're considered as ignorant low-lives who are most likely on welfare and have tons of babies that we can't care for. Me being a black Latina find it hard because Latinos have it bad too. I've learned that generally a person's vocabulary does tell a lot about them. I use slang with my family, but I do speak proper English around everyone else. I believe that most people ( of all races) just don't see how important it is to speak proper English. People see you and make assumptions of who you are, but when you begin to speak you can confirm what they may be thinking.

There is a time and a place for everything. So you need to know when it is okay to use the slang and when it's not okay to use it.
