When I plug anything into the microphone jack of my dell inspiron 9300, it never reads any incoming audio levels. Why won't the microphone jack work? Is there a sound card or something I need? How can I find out? I use the same microphones on my desktop pc and they work fine so one would assume the microphones themselves are not the problem.

Check the Master Volume and see if it's muted:
Start-All Programs-Accessories-Entertainment-Master Volume Control.
