Charlize Theron was born and raised in South Africa. She then eventually moved to America, making her an African-American.

However, Al Sharpton, a black man, was born in American and has probably never been to Africa!

So why do they call him an African American??

I know many people realize how stupid this is, but apparently many plack people do not, because they still want to be called African-American, even though they have never been to Africa!

I agree. It is the latest politically correct term. What will black people be called in another ten years!

I lived in Africa for seventeen months. I am closer to being an African American than Reverand Al!

A real African-American is someone born in Africa. At least that is what I think. I personally liked to be referred to as Black or Black-American.

I answer this question three times a day. White people are completely clueless aren't they.

Sadana has laready answered. Black people prefer to be called Black. Generally speaking, its white people who call us African-American.

BTW, you chose a bad example. It just shows how narrow minded you are. What in the world would lead you to believe Al Sharpton of all people has probably never been to Africa. I know for sure he as at least been to Liberia. Most black american do go to Africa when they get the means.

Most people use the term 'African-American' to not step on anyones toes and to keep the NAACP off their back. Me personally, I think the late James Brown said it best when he said " Say it loud! I'm Black and I'm proud!!"

Would you people get over this African American crap. Most Blacks like being called Black. I think they were given the term African American by politicians who want to be politically correct. And please use the spell check next time.
